Suffolk Libraries Presents: English National Opera: Pirates of Penzance

Amazing recorded theatrical production
Friday 2nd November 2.30pm & 7.30pm Southwold Arts Centre, St Edmunds Hall.  Tickets £10 (£8 for 12s and under)
Suffolk Libraries Presents are amazing performances and cultural events recorded live and screened using top quality projection equipment.
A swashbuckling farce of brilliant humour and razor-sharp wit, Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance makes for the perfect night out. Chock-full of memorable melodies, it includes the famous tongue-twisting patter song from the Major-General and the cowardly Police Sergeant’s ‘When a felon’s not engaged in his employment’.
For the first revival of this smash-hit production from renowned filmmaker Mike Leigh, ENO favourite Andrew Shore returns to sing the role of the army general alongside John Tomlinson as the Sergeant of Police. ENO Harewood Artists David Webb and Soraya Mafi sing the roles of the young lovers, Frederic and Mabel, and Gareth Jones conducts.
Tickets available from Southwold Library & Southwold Arts Centre and via

The Steinway That Wouldn’t Budge: Confessions of a Piano Tuner

Monday 12th November 10.00am
Peter Tryon will be recalling his time tuning the pianos of rural East Anglia & his love of the instrument.
Peter Tryon's “Confessions of a Piano Tuner” is a charming, autobiographical tale of life spent travelling around rural East Anglia tuning pianos. But this is also a personal account from boyhood of how music and more specifically the mechanics of that wonderful instrument, fired early imagination and gave rise to a lifelong fascination and involvement with the piano.
A Suffolk man by adoption, Peter Tryon's love of pianos, organs, and all things musical began when he was a teenager. In addition to tuning and repairing pianos of all sorts, he has worked as a teacher and a Director of Music.  He is organist at the Parish Church in Lavenham.
Peter will be signing copies of his book

Suffolk Libraries Presents: The Phantom of the Opera: Film with Live Music

Friday 23rd November 7.30pm Southwold Arts Centre, St Edmunds Hall.  Tickets £10 (£8 for 12s and under)
Minima perform original live soundtracks to silent films, including the 1925 version of 'The Phantom of the Opera' and give a 21st-Century interpretation of the images of silent film.
Beneath the sewers of the Paris Opera House dwells a masked figure. He is the Phantom, a hideously disfigured composer whose dream is to turn chorus singer Christine into a diva. Lon Chaney, the “Man of a Thousand Faces”, dominates this classic adaptation of the 1910 novel. His ghastly make-up and outrageous performance made this one of the great classics of American silent film.
Formed in 2006, Minima are a Bristol-based four-piece group, with instrumentation including cello, double bass, baritone guitar, acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, autoharp, dulcimer, synthesizer, glockenspiel and drum kit. Their sound is uncompromising and unique; in performance they use no backing tracks or pre-recorded material.
Tickets available from Southwold Library & Southwold Arts Centre and via
