Before Spring Came Summer: The Life of Jane Whorwood 1612-1684

Author Talk by Historian Michelle Hockley Monday 8th July 11.00am

Set in the seventeenth century against a backdrop of civil and domestic unrest, the novel is based on true events, telling the extraordinary life of Jane Whorwood, (1612-1684) a close companion of Charles I and the royal court.

Michelle first encountered Jane Whorwood in the documents held at The British Library, which she discovered when she was invited by Hampton Court Palace to investigate the reason why Charles I escaped the Army in 1647 and to identify the route taken. Her findings were duly published by Historic Royal Palaces; “Charles I's Escape from Hampton Court Palace”.

Michelle later became Senior Early Modern Record Specialist at The National Archives, and amongst a plethora of government documents, Jane Whorwood appeared again in; Court of Chancery, State Papers, Journals of the House of Lords and Commons, which led Michelle to realise that Jane Whorwood's life was undoubtedly interesting over and beyond her bravery and loyalty towards her king.

The novel is based on true events, maintaining integrity to the period and Jane Whorwood's extraordinary life and includes court masque, (with Inigo Jones' flying dolphins), diplomatic ceremonies, weddings, and lots and lots more.

Michelle will be wearing authentic seventeenth century costume and signing copies of her books.
